Mkomazi National Park is home to a few yet crucial Secretarybird breeding pairs, playing a key role in maintaining transboundary connectivity between Kenya and Tanzania within the Tsavo ecosystem. The park also serves as a refuge and a temporary settlement area for dispersing juveniles and subadults.

Although Mkomazi is largely covered by woodlands and dense shrublands, its grasslands provide nesting sites for the resident pairs.

Preserving these open habitats is therefore important for supporting the persistence of breeding Secretarybirds in the area.

For us, it has been a great pleasure to share our work with the park’s ecologists and rangers. Working together will be essential to protect a species that is as unique as it is threatened.

Beyond Secretarybirds, Mkomazi hosts numerous other raptor species — both threatened and non-threatened — and an extraordinary diversity of birds overall, making it an ideal place to get closer to some of the most iconic bird species of African savannas.
